Healthy, Haag Farm Walnuts

No matter how you crack it walnuts have many health benefits. This delicious nut is an exceptional source of omega-3 essential fatty acids, a special type of protective fat the body cannot manufacture. Walnuts’ concentration of omega-3s—a quarter-cup provides 90.8% of the daily recommended value—has many potential health benefits ranging from lower blood pressure and improved cognition to anti-inflammation. In addition, walnuts contain an antioxidant compound called ellagic acid that supports the immune system and appears to have several anticancer properties.

For over 25 years, Haag Farm near Esparto has specialized in growing nutritious insecticide-free walnuts. The customary tan walnuts grown for over 25 years the old-fashioned way with cover crops and “good-bug” biological controls leading to plump Chandler, Tulare, Vina and Yolo Red walnuts.  ‘We use biological controls with both mild herbicides & walnut leaves over the tree rows, chipped walnut prunings over the entire orchard floor,” says Jim Haag. “Our list of healthy natural walnut products includes: Green walnuts used in recipes, walnut leaves used for wines, “Wet” walnuts only for eating, Red and tan walnuts inshell and red and tan walnuts shelled.”
