Farm Fresh Fare Fuels Senior Athletes

What: Capay Valley Growers at 2009 Summer National Senior Games
When: August 1-15, 2009
Where: Stanford University Campus, Palo Alto, CA
Saturday, August 1st, 10,000 athletes age 50 and over from across the United States will gather to participate in the 2009 Summer National Senior Games. The event takes place on the Stanford Campus in Palo Alto, CA, where athletes will compete in 18 different medal sports and 7 demonstration sports. Capay Valley Growers (the founders of the Capay Valley Farm Shop) will offer a Farmers’ Market booth in the Athlete Village, providing access to locally grown fruits, nuts, honey, flowers, vegetables, and more. The market booth will be open 9am – 6pm daily throughout the event.
The Games open with a torch ceremony that embodies the organizers’ desire for sustainable living – the solar torch burns no fossil fuel and is made of reclaimed redwood from a California lumber mill. The cauldron, which will stand at the entrance to the Games, near the Capay Valley Growers booth, throughout the event, is made up of mirrors and solar panels and will glow both day and night. Both torch and cauldron were built and designed by IDEO, a global innovation and design firm based in Palo Alto and the first Capay Valley FarmShare site host.
In an attempt to further reduce the environmental impact of this event, the Senior Games organizers will provide recycling and compost containers alongside trash receptacles. They will also have high-pressure hydration stations where people can refill their own water bottles, and to encourage the use of public transportation, registered athletes will ride free on local bus and rail transit. Volunteer Opportunity
Serving up farm fresh food throughout the 2009 Senior Games will be possible thanks to the help of many volunteers. If you’re interested to donate your time, expertise, and enthusiasm for farm fresh food email Natasha. In exchange for working a shift volunteers will receive a Capay Valley Grown t-shirt or hat.
